New Sports Council Members Announced 13 November 2006

The Department of Tourism & Leisure has announced that the Council of Ministers has appointed a new member to serve a four-year term of office on Sports Council.

At a recent meeting Council welcomed their new member, Jim Travers who has been appointed following the retirement of Brian Shooter. Jim works as an Associate Advocate for Quinn Kneale but is better known as Captain of the successful Laxey AFC. Jim also plays Tennis, Cricket and Golf.

Geoff Karran, who was unanimously elected, once again as Executive Chairman, commented that “Jim has an extensive knowledge of sport which I am sure will be of great value to Council’s work. It is also nice to see the younger element being considered for these appointments.”

Gary Corkhill, Richard Radcliffe and Neil MacGregor have been reappointed for a further term, Gary became a member of Council in 2002 and is presently serving on the Community Key Sports Committee. He has been heavily involved with the administration of the Manx Hockey Association and held various positions within the organisation, including Chairman for five years. Gary is married with three children and is the IT Manager for the Manx Electricity Authority.

Richard was appointed a member of Council in 1998 and has served on the Sports Aid Foundation Management Committee and is presently a member of the Sports Liaison Committee. Richard is a keen road runner and has completed 13 London marathons. He is a member of Ramsey Commissioners and has supported the TT and Manx Grand Prix, marshalling for 35 years and a past Sector Chief Marshal. Neil was appointed in 2002 and is presently a Director of the Manx Sports Aid Foundation.

Neil is a member of the PE Department at Castle Rushen High School. Neil is married with two children and has played a variety of sports, including Rugby, Cricket and Tennis. He is still very active in sport taking part in Iron Man Triathlons and Marathons. Nominations for members were considered by the Council of Ministers and the criteria for selection was made on the candidates wide and varied experience in sport, either at competitive, administrative, coaching or participation level.

Sports Council members are not appointed as representatives of individual sports. At the first meeting of the new Sports Council, Margaret Brown was elected as Vice Chairman of Council, the first woman to have held this post.

Eddie Lowey, MLC, welcomed the new members to the meeting and commented: “Sports Council are very hard working, well organised volunteers who have a very challenging time ahead, especially with the development leading from the Sport & Recreation Strategy and the Launch of the Sports Institute. However, because of their very professional attitude, I am sure they will take this work in their stride.”
