General News rebuilds Blackpool route 14 November 2006

The Isle of Man’s local airline has just achieved its best ever week’s sales on its route to Blackpool International Airport, and is planning to add even more flights in to its timetable in the future to meet demand. The route used to be one of the busiest to/from the Isle of Man, but has declined steadily in recent years. Since it started flying the route in July, has already gained a 75% share of the market, and early indications are that the route will grow this year for the first time in many years. has been working with the Department of Tourism and Leisure in the IOM to promote the route, and one of the principal initiatives has been the branding of a Blackpool tram, with artwork specifically designed to promote the Isle of Man (photo attached). This tram travels up and down the main seafront in Blackpool every day, running the whole length of the Fylde coast from Fleetwood to Lytham St Annes, and is expected to be seen by millions of visitors during the course of a year.

From the beginning of December, will be adding a fourth service every Friday to give customers looking to get away for the weekend even more choice of flight times.

“We are adding even more flights to our already frequent timetable between Blackpool and the Isle of Man, just to keep up with demand”, says’s communications director James Filleul. “This used to be one of the busiest routes to and from the Island, and we were very confident we could reverse the recent decline – we had our busiest week ever on the route last week, and forward sales figures are excellent, so it looks like the route has finally turned the corner. We are particularly grateful to the Department of Tourism and Leisure for their help in promoting the Island in the Blackpool area”.

The Department of Tourism and Leisure have jointly funded an initiative to brand a Blackpool Tram for a year, with Isle of Man artwork : “We are delighted that the initiative seems to be paying off, and the Blackpool route is now growing again – many of our visitors come from that area of the country, and it is important for us to work in partnership with the airlines to increase visitor numbers as much as we can”, says Director of Tourism, Geoff Le Page.

As well as the tram, the Isle of Man is being promoted on major roadside banners near Blackpool airport, through leaflet drops on Blackpool seafront and through high profile advertising campaigns in the North West media.

“We really value our link with the Isle of Man, and it’s great to see the route being promoted and developed again”, says Gareth Kennedy, Director of Business Development at Blackpool International Airport. “Blackpool International Airport has so much potential, with its excellent motorway links and easy access to the Lake District & Scotland and I think with the commitment shown by to building it again, it will soon be thriving”.
