School packs parcels for Kosovo 30 November 2006

CHILDREN from Peel Clothworkers’ School have again been collecting shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.

Pupils aged three to 11 helped to choose presents and pack them for children they will never see and whose names they will never know.

It is the fourth year Peel Clothworkers’ has been a collection centre for the boxes.

The relief agency Samaritan’s Purse is sending Christmas gifts to children who would otherwise not receive presents. Last year the charity sent more than 1.1 million parcels from the British Isles to 13 countries in eastern Europe and Africa.

Since the project started in 1990, more than 47 million youngsters have received gifts.

More than 20 schools across the Island have been packing boxes for this year’s effort. Their boxes are among 3,600 which leave the Island today (Thursday) bound for a warehouse in Wales, from where they will be sent on to Kosovo.

Marlene Akitt, one of the 20-strong team of volunteers from the warehouse in the former Red Cross headquarters in Derby Road, Douglas, will travel to Kosovo in January and hopes to be present when gifts from the Isle of Man are opened.

‘The pupils are very enthusiastic and particularly appreciated the DVD, which showed them some of the people and places where the shoeboxes were sent last year,’ said acting head at Peel Clothworkers, Judith Lund.

‘This can range from Mozambique to Kiev and from children living in orphanages to on the streets or in sewers.’
