Road Show To Deliver Christmas Warning To Shoppers 13 December 2006

This Thursday (December 14th) late night Christmas shoppers will be asked to take a moment to think about the potentially devastating consequences of drinking and driving.

Between 5pm and 8pm, a road show will be held in Regent Street, Douglas, in a joint initiative between the Department of Transport’s Road Safety Unit, the Police, the Ambulance Service and the Fire and Rescue Service.

There will be a display, showing the after effects of a car crash, which it’s hoped will remind people of the dangers of drink driving.

Inspector Derek Flint, of the Roads Policing Unit, explained:

‘We know people have other things on their mind, and after a frenetic couple of hours of late night shopping they will be driving home, thinking about everything else they have to do. But we urge them to think carefully about the dangers of driving after having a drink – it could be a recipe for disaster.’

Road Safety Manager Gordon Edwards added:

‘We are just asking late night shoppers to take a moment out from the hustle and bustle of Christmas.
‘We have had a bad couple of months with collisions on the roads, and we don’t want any more families to suffer the trauma that goes with this. Please – don’t drink and drive this Christmas. And remember, safe drivers think of others.’
