Department of Trade & Industry hosts 3rd Annual Energy Efficiency Exhibition 15 January 2007

The Department of Trade and Industry is hosting the third annual ENERGY EFFICIENCY EXHIBITION at the Villa Marina from 19th to 21st of February 2007. This year’s event promises to offer businesses and consumers practical advice on how to conserve and generate energy. Several island businesses will demonstrate products or provide information on the services they offer over the three day period.

Energy Efficiency Exhibition LogoThe exhibition is open from 12noon until 6pm for businesses on Monday 19th and 9am until 6pm on Tuesday and Wednesday, 20th and 21st for everyone. On the Monday, the focus will be primarily on business or industrial solutions with, at 6pm, a keynote address delivered by Professor Colin Campbell*, a world authority on the oil industry. His premise is that worldwide oil production is in decline whilst there is a steep increase in demand, particularly from China and India and, for oil and petroleum related products, this will lead to economic uncertainty as oil prices increase dramatically in the coming years. The key message is clear: Professor Campbell states

“Countries that plan and prepare to meet the new circumstances will clearly have an advantage over those that live on the outdated economic premises of the past.”

Tuesday and Wednesday will shift focus to homeowners and there will be a number of talks throughout the day by exhibitors on the various ways in which energy can be conserved or generated. Exhibitors such as JTS Energy Ltd., Luminaries Ltd and B&Q Ltd will be there to answer questions and provide advice. Representatives of the Department of Local Government & Environment will be on hand to give information about grants for home improvement and Manx Gas will have energy efficient boilers and information on solar power. The DTI will also be there throughout the show to discuss grants for businesses of all sizes which aim to become more energy efficient. Other organisations are still to be confirmed.

Chief Executive of the Department of Trade and Industry, Chris Corlett, supports this initiative and explains

“The Department is working hard with DOLGE and others to develop an energy policy for the Isle of Man which gives a big picture view of the way forward for the Island. An event such as this will help to give practical advice on an individual level which will help residents and businesses derive maximum benefit from our existing infrastructure.”

The Minister for Trade & Industry, Hon David Cretney MHK expresses his support for the exhibition, stating

“This event can make an enormous difference by showing businesses how to reduce operating costs by becoming more energy efficient. The Department can offer financial support to eligible businesses in this regard, so the exhibition provides a great opportunity to seek advice.”

* C. J. Campbell

C.J Campbell, who was born in 1931, took a D. Phil in geology at Oxford University before joining the oil industry in 1958. His career opened as a field geologist in Borneo, Trinidad, Colombia and New Guinea, before he moved into regional evaluation and management, ending as an Executive Vice-President in Norway. During his career he observed the dwindling number of genuine new prospects and the decline in the size of discovery. Research with the Norwegian authorities formed the basis for his first book on the subject (The Golden Century of Oil) followed by four others, many publications and presentations to industry and government. He is founder of the Association for the Study of Peak Oil ("ASPO") which is now represented in over 25 countries.
