Department of Transport announces traffic calming scheme on Bridge Road, Ballasalla 24 January 2007

The Department of Transport advises that work will shortly commence on a traffic calming scheme at Bridge Road, Ballasalla between the mini roundabout at the Olde Bakery and Rushen Abbey Bridge.

The work will commence on Monday 5th February 2007 and should be completed no later than Friday 6th April 2007. The main points affecting the public are:

  • Speed cushions will be installed at three locations along the road.

  • The widest section of road to the south-west of the church will become narrower with red-coloured surface treatment along the edge of the carriageway. This should encourage motorists to slow down and keep away from the roadside cottages.

  • The footway from the church towards the mini roundabout will be widened to improve pedestrian safety.

  • Red-coloured surface treatment will be applied across the road at the bus stop where we would encourage pedestrians to cross the road more safely.

  • The on-street parking bays will be properly marked out.

Once the work is completed, the carriageway on Bridge Road will appear to be narrower to encourage drivers to travel slower.

Planning and Schemes Manager Jim Davidson said:

"The Department regrets that it was not possible to maintain the amount of on-street parking but we had to weigh up the long-term benefits in terms of the safety of local residents and pedestrians, particularly schoolchildren, and for people who choose to walk to church against the reduction in speed of through traffic."
