Barclays Bank supports Telephone Directory Recycling in 2007 15 February 2007

Barclays Bank has announced that it will be providing facilities for members of the public to recycle their 2006 Telephone Directories. Dedicated recycling points will be available in Barclays Bank in Castletown, Ramsey, Douglas and Circular Road (Eagle Court). Working in conjunction with Buck Recycling the Directories will be collected for recycling.

Stephanie Gray, the Environment Department’s Recycling Manager said,

‘I am delighted that Barclays have made the decision to support recycling of Directories this year. The phone books cannot be recycled through the public bring banks as all paper collected from them is sent to a paper recycling mill in England which cannot accept the directories because of the age of the paper. Manx Telecom had advised us that they would not be arranging a recycling scheme this year, so the Directories would have had to be disposed of as waste. Last year, the public recycled 1478 tonnes of paper in a record breaking 12 months. This included 14 tonnes of phone books.’

The public is therefore asked to continue to support recycling on the Island and take their 2006 Directories to a recycling point in Barclays which will be available from 14th February onwards. They are requested not to place any phone books in the public paper recycling banks as they will have to be removed and will not be recycled. All newspaper recycling banks have been labelled “SORRY, NO TELEPHONE BOOK RECYCLING” . Commercial organisations wishing to recycle their Directories are advised to contact the scheme operator Buck Recycling.
