TT Mountain Road one-way consultation 23 February 2007

THE Department of Home Affairs will take the lead for the public consultation over the option of making the Mountain Road one-way during TT fortnight.

The suggestion of making the section from Ramsey Hairpin to the Creg-ny-Baa one-way comes from the Emergency Services as an option for improving road safety during the Centenary TT, when the volume of visitor traffic is expected to be double that of recent years.

The consultation is being drawn up and will be launched mid-March, subject to Council of Ministers’ approval, and the public will have the opportunity to give their views on the one-way proposal.

Home Affairs Minister Martyn Quayle said:

‘The consultation will be a partnership between the Department of Transport, the Department of Home Affairs and the Department of Tourism and Leisure, but as the main advocates of the one-way option are the Emergency Services, it was thought appropriate that the Department of Home Affairs should lead the consultation.’

Transport Minister David Anderson said:

‘Both the Chief Minister, Hon Tony Brown MHK, and the Departments involved are keen to seek the public’s views on this matter, because the potential implications of making the Mountain Road one-way for TT fortnight would affect many people Island-wide. Nevertheless, this matter is one of public safety and it is important that we and our partners explore all avenues in this area.’
