New Skills Centre 26 February 2007

The Department of Health and Social Security is pleased to announce the opening of its new Skills Centre situated at the former Union Mills Football Club House on the Noble’s Hospital site.

Jacqueline Yates, DHSS Head of Learning said, “This fine new DHSS Skills Centre is a credit to those who have worked so hard on the project. This includes the team of staff who worked on the design, the Estates Directorate (who completed the refurbishment work) and the Administration and Support Team at Keyll Darree who have organised the purchase and installation of the equipment.”

The Centre is an essential facility enabling the teaching and practice of clinical skills that are course requirements for the Pre-Registration Diploma HE in Nursing in order to comply with requirements from the University of Chester. In addition, it will enable the development of sophisticated venepuncture, cannulation and fluid balance skills on a multi-professional basis, moving and handling training, life support skills and much more. The Centre is intended for use by the whole of DHSS and has been designed with flexibility in mind in order to ensure this.

The Centre has been equipped as closely as possible to replicate a ward environment and includes three hospital profiling beds, a nurses station, hand-washing facilities, sluice area, etc. In addition, the facility can be used as a multi-purpose education and training facility with flexible seating, ceiling mounted projector, stackable chairs, white board etc. The main training room can be split into two to accommodate two classes. A storeroom, office, toilets and a small kitchen complete the building.

Noble’s Educational Trusts generously funded the £138,000 refurbishment of the Centre. The equipment in the facility has been provided by the rest of the DHSS estate or will be funded from existing budgets across the Department.
