Chief Executive of DLGE goes to Prison 28 February 2007

Ken Kinrade, Chief Executive of the Department of Local Government and the Environment, visited the new prison site at Jurby on Monday. This was part of a planned safety visit by the Health & Safety at Work Inspectorate.

Ken Kinrade said,

“I found the visit very interesting and enjoyed meeting a number of staff during my visit”. He went on to say, “This is a key project for the Island and we are keen to play our part in supporting this project. It was also a useful opportunity to undertake a joint visit with HSWI staff and look at issues from the regulator’s viewpoint. I am confident that the right balance is being struck between advice and enforcement.”

Ricky Guy, Safety Officer for O’Hare & McGovern, accompanied the DLGE staff during the visit and explained the construction and safety issues they were dealing with.

Steve Bentham, Senior Health & Safety Inspector, said,

“I am pleased with the increased efforts by the principal contactor on site to improve safety standards. I understand that this is a key project for the Department of Home Affairs and safety will remain on our agenda.” Steve Bentham also stated, “We aim to advise and enforce consistently across the Isle of Man and the same standards apply to both Government Department projects and private developers.
