Scottish speaker at drugs conference 5 March 2007

A DAY-LONG conference has been staged for professionals as part of a year-long training programme on drug and alcohol-related issues.

The event last Friday was organised jointly by Margaret O’Reilly, Strategy Co-ordinator for Drugs and Alcohol with the Chief Secretary’s office, and the Department of Education’s Drug and Alcohol Liaison Officer, Orla McGlinchey. Mr Johnstone addresses the conference

The conference, which took place at the Department of Education’s Professional Development Centre at Santon, met an aim of the Chief Minister’s Drug and Alcohol Strategy – providing updated information for staff working with drug and alcohol issues.

The training session was aimed at a wide range of workers who may encounter cocaine and methylampthetamine users, from those working in the health and social care sectors to those working with community safety and other criminal justice issues.

The presenter was Allen Johnstone, who is from the Scottish Training on Drugs and Alcohol (STRADA), part of Glasgow University. Ms McGlinchey said:

‘The conference was well received, with most participants stating that they felt better informed on the issues discussed. These substances are not as yet causing us major problems in the Isle of Man. However, most of those present at the conference are aware of these substances because of problems being encountered in jurisdictions such as England, Scotland and Ireland.’
