School to host Nationalities Day 9 March 2007

THE cultures of many different countries will be celebrated at Nationalities Day, to take place at St Ninian’s High School this month.

The event will take place on Thursday, March 22 from 2.30pm to 5pm.

English as an Additional Language teacher Geraldine O’Neill is organising the event in conjunction with the Learning Support Department and all schools with EAL students are invited. India, Italy, Poland, the Philippines, Thailand, Portugal, Ecuador, Germany and Russia will all be represented.

Mrs O’Neill said:

‘Each nationality will have a display on their culture both in English and their own language. Parents will be attending and providing refreshments from the various nations.
The Isle of Man College is attending and providing information on learning English in the College. There will be EAL learning materials to look at.
We will have a Manx and Modern foreign languages display. There will be a PowerPoint presentation by the students in their various languages. I have organised translators to attend.’

Mrs O’Neill added:

‘We have sent out letters in different languages to parents and we have had a very positive feedback.
A tremendous amount of work and co-ordination has gone into organising this project and we hope it will bring parents together and familiarise them with the education system. We also hope it will allow children from different cultures to meet up and share experiences.’
