Deputy Director features in Money Media 4 April 2007

The Deputy Director of Education has spoken in a magazine interview of the 'great steps forward' being taken towards the Island being a centre of excellence for education.

Margaret Britton is interviewed in the March edition of the magazine Money Media.

The interview charts Manx-born Mrs Britton's career as a head teacher, education adviser, Ofsted inspector and consultant in the UK prior to her return to her homeland and her appointment to the Department of Education.

Simon Richardson reveals that Mrs Britton, who has been in her current post for 18 months, is 'working with colleagues to push ahead with a raft of initiatives aimed at introducing greater accountability, flexibility and plain common sense' into the education system.

She speaks of the need to balance academic excellence with encouraging vocational skills and about steps taken to train teachers to be the heads and deputy heads of the future.

Mrs Britton says: 'There are always exciting things happening in education...after all, what would be more exciting than having a positive influence on the learning opportunities for children and young people.'
