Appointment of Deputy Deemster 12 April 2007

Applications are invited for the position of Deputy Deemster, to be appointed pursuant to section 3 of the High Court Act 1991, as amended. The Deputy Deemster will be responsible for preparing for the trial of cases assigned to him or her, for the management of such cases, and for presiding over court proceedings and giving judgement. The Deputy Deemster will also be responsible for administration functions, and projects assigned to him or her.

The appointment will be made by His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor, on the advice of an Advisory Appointments Committee. Candidates for this position must meet the following criteria:-

• A qualified advocate, barrister or solicitor of at least 10 years standing;

• A comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Manx Law;

• A comprehensive knowledge of the Rules of the High Court of Justice of the Isle of Man and of court practices and procedures;

• A high level of professional achievement in the areas of law in which they have been engaged.

The position will be subject to the Isle of Man Civil Service Regulations, modified as necessary to meet the specific requirements of the Judiciary. The salary will be determined by the Joint Committee of Tynwald on the Emoluments of Certain Public Servants.
