Enabling works on Tower of Refuge 13 April 2007

The Department of Transport is to commence enabling works on the Tower of Refuge on Monday 16th April 2007. The work is weather and tide dependent and, following consultation with the Department of Local Government and the Environment (DOLGE) Environmental Protection Unit, will be carried out between the hours of 6.00am and 8.30pm, and is anticipated to be completed by Friday 20th April 2007.

The Department commenced essential repairs to the Tower in June last year, following a structural survey by the Department’s Design Division. The structural survey further prescribed an ongoing maintenance programme to allow early identification of future structural defects.

The enabling works will involve the excavation of a new approach channel to the Tower and are in preparation for a new jetty, which will facilitate the essential ongoing maintenance of the Tower of Refuge. The Department regrets that there may be some noise disturbance created by these enabling works, the likelihood of which will be dependent on weather conditions.

Weather and tides permitting, the Department intends to commence the next phase of the jetty works during week commencing 14th May.
