Manx Heritage Flower Festival launched this week 16 April 2007

Tourism Minister Adrian Earnshaw will launch the Manx Heritage Flower Festival 2007 on Saturday at St John’s Methodist Church.

It is hoped that representatives from all 16 churches and chapels participating this year will be present at the launch which starts at 10.30am.

Since it started in 1990, the festival has attracted thousands of people to Island churches and new for this year there will be a treasure hunt, aided by two poetic clues for each church.

In the programme Mr Earnshaw says:

‘I hope you enjoy the splendour of the different floral displays and join with me to applaud the organisers and those who have worked so hard to decorate their church or chapel with such wonderful and imaginative displays. Whether you manage to visit one or all of the churches don’t forget to take your camera as, due to the success of the last two years, there is another chance to enter the popular photo competition where you could win a great prize. The competition is sponsored this year by Mannin Media and Richard Kinley.’

Manx Heritage Flower Festival will run throughout Manx National Week – from July 1-8. Participating churches will have displays on the theme of ‘Set my People Free’, which compliments the new Isle of Man Government strategy ‘Freedom to Flourish’, being developed to promote, protect and improve the Island. As 2007 also marks the anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in the UK, this theme will no doubt provide scope for creativity in abundance.

In addition to the fabulous floral displays, photographs and paintings on view, a wide selection of refreshments are available, including cream teas, morning coffee and even three course lunches. Free souvenir pamphlets listing all the participating churches and special events during the festival are available from the Isle of Man Welcome Centre in the Sea Terminal, Douglas and more information can be obtained by visiting the website www.manxflowerfestival.org
