A stepping stone to secondary education 25 April 2007

ONE of the big steps children take in their school careers is the move from primary school to secondary school.

On the Island, both primary and secondary schools have traditionally worked together to make sure this move is as smooth as possible.

To support this process even further, the Department of Education is asking all schools to take part in a variety of transition activities in English, mathematics and science from this year.

These have been devised and piloted by local teachers and will mean that some work started in Year 6 – pupils’ last year at primary school – will be continued, in a variety of ways, in Year 7, when they start secondary school. More than 900 pupils make the step up each year.

Martin Barrow, Adviser for 3-11 Education, explained:

‘This allows pupils to clearly demonstrate to their new teachers the standard of work they are capable of and provides valuable contextual information to put alongside more formal assessments.’

Mr Barrow continued:

‘Transition units have been used before in some parts of the Island but this is the first time that all Year 6 children will carry out the same activities. Having all the children involved means that, regardless of which secondary school they move on to, it will be possible to undertake the follow-up activities in Year 7. The activities have been designed to integrate with and support the existing Year 6 and 7 curriculum and, as well as provide valuable information for teachers, they should also give the children a sense of continuity as they take this big step in their educational life.’
