“Pandemic Flu – The Facts” and “What is Pandemic Flu?” 26 April 2007

The DHSS is launching two public information documents entitled “Pandemic Flu – The Facts” (a short leaflet) and “What is Pandemic Flu?” (a detailed booklet).

Mr Eddie Teare, MHK, Minister for Health and Social Security said, “The DHSS has taken the lead for preparing for a flu pandemic. Communicating accurate facts to the public is a key aspect of dealing with a major incident such as the flu pandemic. I would like to point out that the leaflet is the start of our communications and we will continue to make every effort to ensure that the Manx public are kept fully informed. As the leaflet says – Together we can all help to Fight the Flu.”

The purpose of the documents is to raise awareness of the pandemic amongst members of public (the leaflet) and provide more detailed information to those who seek such information (the booklet).

The World Health Organisation (WHO) predicts that a flu pandemic is most likely in the next 2-3 years; it is difficult to predict the timing or the impact of the pandemic at this stage. One of the key issues in dealing with a pandemic is to provide accurate information in a timely manner to the public. The DHSS has produced a Communications Plan for Public Health / Medical aspects.

The first step in the Communication Plan is to raise awareness of pandemic flu and provide the basic facts to the public. The short leaflet is intended to do this. The leaflet is being distributed to all Isle of Man households by the Isle of Man Post Office during the week commencing 30 April 2007.

Message to all residents of the island:

  • Please read the leaflet and keep it for future reference
  • If you need more information, a more detailed booklet is available, please contact Public Health on 642688 to request a copy.
  • If you have not received the leaflet by 8 May 2007 and would like to receive a copy, please contact Public Health to arrange for a copy to be sent to you. It is important that you contact us if you do not receive the leaflet as we are likely to use the same distribution route for the other documents on pandemic flu (some of which contain advice and information on What to do if you think you have Pandemic Flu etc) and it is important the we identify any problems in distribution before further mailings commence.
