Free Seminar on Improving Standards of Electrical Works in the Isle of Man 4 May 2007

New regulations being introduced in July this year aim to improve the standard of domestic electrical installation work.

From July 1st 2007, anyone undertaking electrical installation work in domestic properties must comply with a new Part of the Building Regulations (Part P).

The Department introduced the new regulations to prevent injuries and fires caused by substandard electrical installation carried out by persons who are not appropriately qualified and experienced. Those carrying out work that does not comply will be committing a criminal offence.

The Department recognises that this is a significant change and contractors need to make sure they are fully up-to-speed with the new requirements if they are to remain competitive and operate legally.

Under the Part P requirements, electricians will be able to self-certify that their work is fully up to the standards required by joining a government approved Competent Person Scheme. If they do not register with such a scheme, they must notify the Local Authority Building Control Section in advance of the work. There are some exceptions for minor works, such as replacing an existing socket or ceiling rose.

Once an electrician has been assessed under a scheme, they are then able to self-certify that their work complies with the Building Regulations and as such, are exempt from notifying Building Control before commencing work.

To help contractors find out more, the Isle of Man Planning & Building Control Directorate, in collaboration with the Electrical Contractors’ Association, is hosting a free information evening for contractors to explain the implications of Part P in greater detail and provide advice on how best to meet the new requirements. The event will take place on Monday 21st May 2007 at 6.45 p.m. at the 1st Floor Lecture Room, Elmwood House, Greenfield Road, Douglas.

To register for the event, or to find out more about the Competent Person Scheme, please contact Siamack Rowaichi on 01624 685746 or e-mail: , or Tony Cooke, Electrical Contractors’ Association North West Regional Manager on 01925 755 449 or e-mail:
