The new vehicle is a Citroen Relay exhibition unit and has an 18 foot, expandable body and a fold-out awning. It was purchased from a Ministry of Defence surplus sale, to replace the old Echo Control vehicle which has reached the end of its useful life.

George Waft MLC, Member of the Department of Home Affairs with responsibility for emergency planning, unveiled the vehicle at the DHA’s Homefield office. He said:

‘This vehicle is an excellent addition to the Department’s facilities. It will provide a mobile base for use by incident commanders at major and minor incidents. It can also be used to promote the work of the Department and its divisions at events around the Island, such as agricultural shows, and will be available to police and Civil Defence commanders as required.’

The Island’s Emergency Planning Officer Martin Blackburn added:

‘Some of the fittings have been reinstated and it has now been painted dark blue with the Isle of Man Government crest. It’s a cheap but effective solution to provide mobile facilities which we lost when Echo Control reached the end of its working life. It means we can instantly establish a

command centre when an incident occurs, without using valuable time checking the locality for a suitable base. I’m sure it will prove to be a very versatile unit which will provide excellent service.’

The Mobile Incident Co-ordination Vehicle, which cost around £7,500 including re-fitting and painting, will be in use during the TT fortnight when the Isle of Man police will use the facility as a mobile base.
