Pre-TT briefing for firefighters 11 May 2007

All officers in the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service attended a pre-TT briefing yesterday (Thursday, May 10).

Fire Service pre-TT briefingThey were joined by Department of Home Affairs Member George Waft MLC and managers from the Island’s ambulance service, the police and the Emergency Services Joint Control Room. In addition representatives came from the race organisers including Clerk of the Course Neil Hanson, the Emergency Planning Officer from the Department of Home Affairs Martin Blackburn and Trading Standards Officer John Peet, who is responsible for issuing the petrol licence at the TT Grandstand.

Station Commander Tim Howland from Douglas Fire Station organised the pre-TT briefing. He explained:

‘We held the first pre-TT briefing before last year’s event and it received such positive feedback we decided to do it again. It brings together all senior and junior officers in the Fire Service, including retained firefighters, and enables us to make everyone aware of all the issues in respect of fire safety cover during the TT festival and all its associated events around the Island.’

Chief Fire Officer Brian Draper was delighted with the outcome of the briefing. He said:

‘Around 40 people attended the briefing and we covered everything from the Centenary TT practices and races to the various other events such as the Peel Bay music festival, Honda Day, the St John’s re-enactment and Douglas Promenade entertainment. It consolidated all the knowledge we had for each event into one package so everyone across our organisation and our partners in other agencies could gain a greater understanding of our operational plans.’

Firefighters also had a briefing session in the afternoon to update officers in respect of new policies and equipment in the Fire and Rescue Service.
