New Fostering Service 18 May 2007

The Department of Health and Social Security is about to launch a new Fostering Service that has been developed in partnership with the Isle of Man Children’s Society, the Isle of Man Adoption Society and St Christopher’s (IOM).

Eddie Teare MHK, Minister for Health and Social Security said,

"I welcome this new initiative which can only be of benefit for the Children and Young People in our care. Foster carers do a very difficult job and do not seek public recognition but I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for a significant contribution to the care of our Children and Young People and to encourage people who may be interested in becoming foster carers to make themselves known to the Fostering Service.”

The new service will take over responsibility from Fosterplus on 30th June, 2007 and aims to give a new impetus to Fostering in the Island and expand the range of placements on offer to children and Young People in the care of the Department.

Mr Peter Smallridge, Interim Director of Social Services said,

"I am delighted that we have engaged with all the agencies concerned with Child Care in the Isle of Man as I believe that fostering has a major role to play in our caring services and that there is potential for the service to develop further on the Island. We have met with a number of our existing foster parents who are doing an excellent job. We need to ensure that they receive the right level of support in their work and to attract more foster carers. We know that family life provides the best care for Children and Young People and if they cannot live with their own family then a foster family is the best alternative in most cases.”

The new service will commence with a publicity campaign in order to promote fostering on the Island and seek out new families to join the Department’s existing band of dedicated Foster Carers.
