Department of Tourism & Leisure Photo Competition, 31 May 2007

The Department of Tourism and Leisure will accept entries in the annual Isle of Man Department of Tourism and Leisure Photo Competition from Friday (June 1) and are pleased to announce a new partnership with Nationwide International Ltd this year.

Photographers have just one month to lodge their entries in seven categories and the Department hopes winning entries will help promote the Isle of Man. There is more than £5,000 available in prize money for the best images, and the closing date for receipt of entries is July 2. Entries must be high quality digital images or transparencies, and should have been taken during the past year (between July 2006 and June 2007).

Photographers can enter one or two images in any or all of seven categories covering various aspects of Island life, and the picture judged best overall will scoop £1,000. Seven prizes of £500 can be awarded to the winners whose images, in the eyes of the judges, best represent the Isle of Man in each of seven categories - Scenic landscapes, scenic coastal, heritage, transport, wildlife, Isle of Man events and miscellaneous.

Tourism and Leisure Minister Adrian Earnshaw said:

‘I would like to thank Nationwide International Ltd for sponsoring the prizes for the photography competition and my Department is looking forward to working with them this year. Holding this competition is a way for us to acquire some new photographs to include in our promotional material and I hope people will support it enthusiastically. I am certainly looking forward to seeing the entries.’

The judging panel will include Mr Earnshaw and Mr Carl Gandy, managing director of Nationwide International.

Carl Gandy said:

‘I am delighted that Nationwide International has been able to team up with the Department of Tourism and Leisure to support their annual photography competition. We live on an Island of contrasts, with some truly stunning scenery and events. I know, having seen entries from previous years, that the material submitted is very impressive.

I think the competition really does capture the spirit of our Island, allowing us all to share in the moment and celebrate the Isle of Man as we continue to flourish. ‘I have no doubt that with the TT Centenary upon us this year we will see some top quality entries, but I would encourage everyone to have a go and enter, especially with such a broad range of categories.’

The competition is open to amateur and professional photographers who can enter up to 14 images - two in each category. All entries must be received by the Department of Tourism and Leisure, at St Andrew’s House, Finch Road, Douglas, IM1 2PX by midday on July 2, 2007 for judging. An entry form and full rules are on the Department’s website - Last year’s winning photos can also be seen here.
