Madagascar Matters 18 June 2007

In support of the European Zoo campaign to raise Euro 350,000 for wildlife conservation in Madgascar, the Curraghs Wildlife Park is holding a special weekend devoted to the wildlife of the Eighth continent. There will be walks, talks, painting and drawing activities focusing on Madagascar’s wildlife and a chance to get close to the animals in the Park’s collection – ruffed lemurs, ring-tailed lemurs, brown lemur, gentle lemurs, Meller’s ducks, Madagascar teal and, of course, the hissing cockroaches. On Saturday and Sunday, 23rd & 24th June, staff and volunteers will be present in the Wildlife Park to inform the public about the fascinating but threatened wildlife of this little known part of the world. There will even be a chance to taste Malagasy food in the Lakeside Café.

The General Manager of the Curraghs Wildlife Park, Nick Pinder, commented;

“We were very pleased when the European zoos chose Madagascar as their theme for this year’s campaign because, unlike previous themes of rhinos and tigers, we’ve actually got some of these animals. And they’re really special, nearly all the lemurs are critically endangered and they really do need our help. We’ve already sent some money to help Malagasy people after severe flooding earlier this year and we want to raise much more to help them look after their own wildlife.”

The Curraghs Wildlife Park is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm. www.gov.im/wildlife
