Industrial action in Royal Mail announced 22 June 2007

One-day industrial action is planned to be staged by Royal Mail and Post Office Limited workers in the UK on Friday 29th June 2007. The planned industrial action excludes Royal Mail’s Parcelforce workers who are operating as normal.

The announcement was made yesterday by the Communication Workers Union (CWU) following unsuccessful pay negotiation talks between Royal Mail and the CWU. It’s the first action of this kind for 11 years.

The industrial action will come into effect from 3am on June 29, until 3am on June 30. The CWU has also warned that further industrial action will be staged within two weeks from June 29, 2007 if no resolution to the dispute is reached.

Disruption to Isle of Man customers will be kept to a minimum and Isle of Man Post Office customers will see their mail from the UK being delivered as normal on Friday morning with all collections and dispatch of mail to the UK happening at the usual times on Friday night.

Customers wishing to post mail to the UK on Thursday may do so but it is likely it will not be delivered until Saturday at the earliest with some mail possibly being delayed up to three days. Parcelforce, bank pouch services and local to local mail will remain unaffected during the industrial action.

Isle of Man Post Office’s Mails Operations Manager, Malcolm MacPherson, said:

“Wherever possible we would advise customers to get this week’s mail posted by Wednesday. Royal Mail will try to keep its Special Delivery service going as normal but it may be subject to disruption. Customers who have urgent items to send on Thursday and Friday are recommended to consider using Parcelforce’s guaranteed next day services.”

Mr MacPherson added:

Isle of Man Post Office would like to make it clear that its employees are not involved in this industrial action and every effort will be taken to minimise any disruption caused as a result of the action in the UK.”

Further information about the industrial action will be provided once it has been announced.
