Great Improvements at Saw Mill 10 July 2007 The Departments Saw Mill at St Johns has recorded an upturn in production and output that was needed to facilitate further investment in equipment to streamline production and increase outputs. Minister, Phil Gawne, commented This is a credit to the new management of the Saw Mill and to the staff working in the Mill who have grasped the challenge of improving its environment to safeguard and improve the Mills future. It is the aim of the Department to utilise the Islands forestry resources to produce high quality agricultural products with a desire for self-sufficiency in Manx fencing products and other timber related products. The Saw Mill is also producing a range of garden products from picnic tables and benches through to storage sheds and special cut timber and will continue to make available firewood for the winter. Firewood or fuel in general is also something that the Department are investigating since the offices at St. Johns and the Saw Mill are already heated by sawdust produced from the Mill. The Department is working with other Government Departments to identify ways of using the timber supplies on the Island to produce Carbon Neutral heating, which will be a feature incorporated in the design of the Departments new headquarters building to be constructed at St. Johns. The Department is looking forward to the development of the site and the increased productivity and efficiency that this will bring and hope that people will seize the opportunity to buy quality Manx products from local plantations.
