Isle of Man Meat to Investigate New Markets 11 July 2007

Minister Phil Gawne has confirmed that the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry will be joint funding an exciting new initiative by Isle of Man Meat, the farmers’ co-operative which runs the Island’s meat plant.

The project will involve a very careful analysis of the market opportunities both on the Island and elsewhere, to establish how high quality Manx meat could be sold into new markets and how innovative products could be developed to add value to Manx meat.

The Minister said “I believe this continues the great progress being achieved by Isle of Man Meat and I am pleased to see they have taken the bold step of investing to secure their future. I am very pleased that they are exploring these opportunities and feel it is very important that the Department provides significant support to help get this project off the ground.”

Mr Phil Teare, Managing Director at Isle of Man Meat, said “This is another key step towards our aim of achieving a sustainable business. The meat sector is moving very quickly and I am confident that this careful analysis of our market place will identify additional opportunities which we can seize to grow the business.”

Mr Teare added “We have had great success recently with identifying product lines on the Island, such as our recent introduction of both heavy pigs and Aberdeen Angus beef. I am confident that there are more opportunities of this nature which we can profitably supply.”

Tenders have been sought for the project from meat sector specialists and it is hoped that the contract will be awarded in the next few weeks.
