Manx farmers showing they are world class 11 July 2007

Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Minister Phil Gawne is very impressed with the recent moves by the farming industry to become Farm Assured using a world class external audit process.

The Minister said “It is great to see the Manx farmers actively seeking external inspection from UK food assurance specialists so that they can demonstrate they are world class food producers.”

Over the last few months, around 200 farmers have signed up for the voluntary scheme, which is co-ordinated by EFSIS who are, in their own words, “the premier third party independent inspection and certification service, providing retailers, manufacturers, farmers and caterers, throughout the world, with expert inspection and certification of their operations to ensure only the highest standards are maintained.”

The Minister concluded “The farmers who have passed this accreditation process can proudly boast to any supermarket that their production is as good as it gets!”

He continued “This is an important part of the Island’s food producers initiatives to improve and demonstrate that Manx produced food is amongst the best in the world.”

One recent successful candidate, Mr David Kermeen of Ballaneddin, Ballaugh said “I was very nervous of the inspection process, even though I was confident we are doing the job properly. However, the inspection went very well and I was delighted to achieve full accreditation.”
