Isle of Man to welcome ex hockey ace 11 July 2007

The Island is preparing for a hockey extravaganza to take place at the NSC as they welcome ex England and Great Britain goalkeeper, Simon Mason, for a day of coaching.

With 102 caps for England and 63 for Great Britain under his belt, Simon is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers the world has ever seen! Now he is passing his expertise onto a new generation of budding stars.

Simon will be taking two sessions, both at the NSC astroturf pitch on Saturday August 11, 2007. The first of these will take place from 10.30am until 1.30pm and is open to all coaches, level 1 and above. This session will show instructors how to get the best out of goalkeepers through individual practices as well as integrating them into team practices.

The second session is for the star goalies of tomorrow. It will take place from 1.30pm until 2.30pm and is open to those under the age of 18. This session is aimed at the more practical side of goalkeeping and will include some excellent exercises and practices to help junior goalkeepers improve their skills.

However, if you are over 18 and not a coach, you may still have the opportunity to benefit from Simon’s expertise. The Manx Hockey Association are looking for volunteers to take part in demonstrations at the coaches’ session.

James Shimmin, Chairman of the Manx Hockey Association said:

“If you are over 18 and have access to a goalie kit, we need you! This is a fantastic opportunity for experienced goalkeepers to get some personal tips and tactics from a world class player. So don’t think ‘If only I’d gone’, apply today by calling the hockey development office on 651572.”

Dominic Hobdell, Hockey Development Officer, from the Sports Development team at the NSC said:

“We are absolutely delighted that Simon has agreed to come to the Island. There is a lot of talent over here and while progress is definitely being made, we don’t often get the chance to showcase it. With the help of a top notch player like Simon, we may be able to find new and more effective ways to nurture our talent, which could take some of our young people a very long way!”

Although places are still available, applicants are encouraged to apply ASAP to avoid disappointment. For more information or to apply for either of the session please call the hockey development office on 651572. Please note that there is a £30 charge for the coaching session.
