Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) – Department Response 4 August 2007

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is coordinating actions with the rest of Government and broader industry stakeholders to take whatever measures necessary to ensure that the Island is kept free of FMD.

The Department’s priorities are to;

  • Minimise the risk of FMD being introduced to the Island.
  • Reduce the potential for spread of the disease within the Island should it occur.
  • Prepare and hold, in a high state of readiness, the contingency plan and equipment necessary to combat an outbreak.

Bio security measures are be implemented at all air and sea ports and keepers of livestock are requested to stop all livestock movements, and follow Bio-security procedures when moving on and off farms.

DAFF is closing all its land to public ramblage, however the majority of glens and plantations will remain open with the exception of Ballaugh and Tholt-y-Will plantations and Dhoon Glen which will be closed.

Access to Kerrowdhoo, Sulby, Clypse, Injebreck (east bank) reservoirs and Block Eairy and Eairy Dam will be closed. Cringle, Ballure, Injebreck (west bank) remain open and will continue to be stocked.

An emergency meeting of the sub-committee of the Council of Ministers will meet at 2pm today.
