Foxdale School flies the flag 8 August 2007

FOXDALE Primary School has achieved a first for the Isle of Man after being awarded an International School Award.

The International School Award is an accreditation scheme for curriculum-based international work in schools across the British Isles.

The ISA supports schools to develop:

• An international ethos embedded throughout the school

• A majority of pupils within the school involved in international work

• Collaborative curriculum-based work with partner schools

• Curriculum-based work across a range of subjects

• Year-round international activity

• Involvement of the wider community

• Evaluation leading to improved activities.

The ISA offers:

• a framework within which to form and develop international partnerships and achieve curriculum goals

• ideas for developing collaborative curriculum-based international work with partner schools

• recognition for teachers and their schools that instil a global dimension into the learning experience

• opportunities to raise the school's profile through local and national media coverage.

Foxdale's Science and ICT co-ordinator, Elizabeth Bankes-Jones, said:

‘For many years we have been involved in linking with other schools across the world and we continue to develop our curriculum to include many aspects of global citizenship. We work closely with the One World Centre and have speakers from other countries to give assemblies/presentations and various workshops which raises our awareness of the world beyond the Isle of Man. Much of our global citizenship work is embedded within our curriculum and is a part of the ethos of our school.’

The award, the first to be achieved by a school in the Isle of Man, will be presented in London on 10 October. It runs for three years and needs to be re-accredited after this time.

Mrs Bankes-Jones said:

‘We would like to extend our thanks to the Manx media for their support, and congratulate the children, staff and community of Foxdale for their commitment to developing internationalism.'
