Members sought for Police Advisory Group 9 August 2007

COMMUNITY representatives are being sought to serve on the Police Advisory Group.

The Department of Home Affairs has placed a public notice in local newspapers inviting members of appropriate Island organisations to put themselves forward.

Home Affairs Member George Waft MLC, who chairs the Group, explained:

‘The Department is required to establish the Police Advisory Group under the Police Act 1993. Members will comprise myself representing the Department, Members of Tynwald, and community representatives. Our remit is to advise the Department on maintaining and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the Isle of Man Constabulary, along with having input into the formulation of the Policing Plan.
‘The Group’s remit has been revised this year with the aim of clarifying its role and purpose, and I’d invite anyone who feels they can contribute to contact the Department before the end of the month,’ Mr Waft added.

Community representatives, who are appointed for a five year term, have previously included youth group managers and retail sector representatives. No formal qualifications are needed but applicants need to demonstrate a sound understanding of their local community together with the ability to work with the Isle of Man Constabulary and the Department. Speaker of the House of Keys Steve Rodan has accepted an invitation to serve on the Group alongside MHKs representing the neighbourhood policing areas of the Island.

Anyone interested in becoming a community representative on the Police Advisory Group should write, fax or email the Group’s Administrator Mrs Karen Greatbatch at the Department of Home Affairs, 88 Woodbourne Road, Douglas, IM2 3AP, email pag.dha@gov.im by Friday August 31, 2007.

More information about the Police Advisory Group can be found on the Department’s website at www.gov.im/ceo/pag.
