Ambassador visits Department of Education 24 August 2007

THE Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines visited the Department of Education this afternoon (Friday).

His Excellency Edgardo B. Espiritu was welcomed by Education Minister Anne Craine MHK, Director of Education John Cain and Deputy Director Margaret Britton.

Mr Thornley spoke of the differences between the UK and Isle of Man education systems and the freedoms the Isle of Man has to offer the school population, which includes 63 Filipino and Tagalog speaking children.

His Excellency and Consul General Leo Herrera-Lim were told of the 1-2-1 Project to give students their own laptops and were shown how students use programmes such as Sketch Up and Garageband to create 3D graphics and devise their own advertisements and podcasts.

The Minister said the ICT section had been invited to lecture all over the world and had attracted visitors from countries keen to adopt its ideas.

The visitors revealed that in the Philippines, population 86 million, the biggest slice of the budget is set aside for education and that wherever he travels, the Ambassador likes to meet the country's Education Minister.

His Excellency and Mr Herrera-Lim are on a three-day visit to the Island's Filipino community, accompanied by their wives and the consular team.

The Minister presented them with a gift of hand-made Manx chocolates before their departure.
