Primary leadership and management certificate presentation 3 September 2007

TEACHERS who have recently completed leadership and management training will be presented with their certificates by Education Minister Mrs Anne Craine MHK.

The presentation takes place on Friday, September 14 at 4.30pm at the Isle of Man College.

Seventeen teachers have completed Level 2 training, which is aimed at those teachers who have responsibility for leading an area of the curriculum or some other distinct aspect of primary school life.

The programme was run throughout the last academic year and involved teachers attending four days of training and completing assignments and an assessed task based on work the teachers had been doing in school.

A further 32 teachers have completed Level 3 training, which is aimed at teachers who have strategic leadership and management responsibilities in schools – perhaps as deputy heads or team leaders – and this is the first group of teachers to complete this level of training.

The Level 3 programme runs over two years and involves eight days of training as well as a range of school-based tasks and an assessed written assignment.

Co-ordinating adviser for 3-11 education Martin Barrow said:

‘The Department of Education regards this programme as an important part of its work in helping schools to continually seek ways to maintain their development and further raise standards.’

Both the Level 2 and Level 3 training are to be repeated in this academic year.

Mr Barrow said:

‘The programme has been devised and is being tutored by members of the Department’s Education Improvement Service and local headteachers. This ensures that it is relevant to the Island’s schools. The overall package of training also makes a significant contribution to ensuring that teachers are well equipped to take on roles as deputy head teachers and headteachers in the future, should they wish to.’
