Embroidery Day 2007 19 September 2007

An embroiderer shows off her skills at The Grove.Sunday 9 September saw another successful Embroidery Day at the Grove, Ramsey, with members of the Embroiderers Guild giving demonstrations of the craft to visiting members of the public.

Matthew Richardson, MNH Curator of Social History commented:

“We have held an Embroidery Day at the Grove for a number of years now and it is always a popular event. We are grateful to members of the Embroiderers Guild for giving their time and making the day such a success. The Grove is a very appropriate setting as embroidery was a popular pastime for Victorian ladies, and the Gibbs family were no exception to this.” A young embroiderer demonstrates Canvas Work,

Members of the Guild demonstrated traditional embroidery techniques, for example ‘Stumpwork’, ‘Canvas Work’ and ‘Hardanger’ which would have been familiar to Alice and Janet Gibb, the last two members of the Gibb family to live at the Grove.

Maureen Kennaugh, a member of the IOM Embroiders’ Guild commented:

Members of the IOM Embroiderers Guild demonstrate embroidery“Demonstrating embroidery at the Grove is one of the highlights of the IOM Embroiderers’ Guild calendar as the Grove creates a wonderful environment in which to share our skills and passion. There was a constant flow of visitors keen to see such a wide variety of techniques being demonstrated and to such a high standard. What was really enjoyable was seeing both young and older generations learning skills together and from each other.”

There were also more modern examples of the craft on show, illustrating the point that embroidery is still a thriving hobby in today’s world. The Guild has a thriving Young Embroiderers section who it is hoped will carry these skills forward into the 21st Century.
