New move to promote the Isle of Man Government message 21 September 2007

CHIEF Minister Tony Brown MHK has announced the formation of a Communications Unit to help the Isle of Man Government deliver clear and consistent messages to audiences at home and abroad.

The move is a logical next step in the strategy to enhance the Island’s national identity and international reputation, thereby supporting its economic development, living standards and quality of life.

Centrally based in the Chief Secretary’s Office, the new unit comprises Government’s Freedom to Flourish Co-ordinator Carol Hunter and its Press and Public Relations Officer Alistair Ramsay.

The team’s role includes advising and assisting the various arms of Government to achieve co-ordinated corporate communication – reflecting key ‘Freedom to Flourish’ themes - through such areas as media relations, website content, publications, presentations and promotional activity.

Policies that are important to enhancing national identity will also be considered through sub-committees of the Council of Ministers covering Economic Development, Social Policy, Infrastructure and Environment, Governance, and Constitutional & External Relations.

The Chief Minister said:

Government has a duty to explain to the public what it is doing and why. It must also defend and promote the Island’s international reputation. I take both those responsibilities very seriously.
‘The creation of the Communications Unit is a logical development, bringing together two existing public relations functions and adding a new responsibility for co-ordination of Government communications. It underlines the importance to the Isle of Man Government of delivering clear and consistent messages to audiences both on and off the Island.’
