New Director of Social Services 1 October 2007

The Department of Health and Social Security announced that Andrew Swithinbank has taken up the post of Director of Social Services, replacing the Interim Director Peter Smallridge CBE.

Eddie Teare MHK, Minister for Health and Social Security said,

“I am delighted that the Department has a new Director of Social Services. Andrew Swithinbank brings not only his skills and experience to the role, but also a great understanding of Social Services in an Isle of Man context. I look forward to working closely with him to ensure that the Department delivers the best possible Social Services to the people of the Isle of Man. I would also like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Peter Smallridge CBE for his valuable contribution to the Department over the last year.”

David Killip, DHSS Chief Executive said,

“I'm delighted that Andrew is going to take up this challenging post - he will have a very large and wide-ranging agenda ahead of him but I know he relishes the task. I also welcome the fact that he will bring a wide range of skills and experience to bear when he works as a member of the Senior Management Team.”

Andrew Swithinbank, new Director of Social Services said,

“I am extremely pleased to take on the task of leading Social Services through exciting and challenging times. We currently have excellent services and I hope to drive forward further improvement and innovation, supported by our enthusiastic and dedicated staff.”

Andrew continued,

“I am committed to working in partnership with other government agencies, voluntary and community organisations and carers to provide support, protection and opportunities for people in need .Together we can enhance the quality of life of the users of our services. I will endeavour to fulfil the trust placed in me.”

Andrew Swithinbank takes up the role as Director of Social Services after serving nearly 4 years as Assistant Director for Social Services responsible for Adult Services. Prior to coming to the Isle of Man, he was Director of the European Institute of Social Services – a centre of excellence in Research & Development, international project management and training in innovative social care. This included advising East European countries on establishing and modernising Social Services for children and adults. Andrew has worked in the leadership team of Kent Social Services in policy and community liaison roles after holding several development and management positions in voluntary organisations. He was educated at Lancaster and Colorado Universities.
