Children Flying Kites Snag on Overhead Power Lines 11 October 2007

The remains of a kite were found in the centre of Ramsey last evening where it appeared it had become entangled on an overhead powerline. Attempts had clearly been made to remove the kite by the owners but fortunately for them, without success. Of extreme concern to MEA were clear burnt remnants of the kite at the site. The incident caused some dozen properties to be without power for a period until engineers attended the site.

The MEA cannot stress strongly enough to parents and children how important it is to stay clear of powerlines when flying kites. Coming into contact with these lines could potentially kill and thankfully on this particular occasion no individual has come to harm.

The Authority is currently working with the Department of Education on sending out safety leaflets to all the Island schools to advise students and parents on keeping safe around electricity outdoors, particularly with regard to the MEA’s various plant across the Island.

Chief Executive, Ashton Lewis appealed to the public to ensure that should a problem arise, such as this, the Authority must be called immediately on 687687 where calls will be directed to a 24-hour on call engineer. Please help to keep our children safe.
