Working Group begins consultation on the future of Queen's Pier 11 October 2007

THE Council of Ministers Working Group considering the future of Queen’s Pier in Ramsey is issuing a questionnaire to the public as the first stage of its consultation on the issue.

The questionnaire will be mailed to 3,200 randomly selected addresses – 1,800 in Ramsey and 1,400 in the rest of the Island. It seeks respondents’ views on a range of possible options, from doing nothing to restoration funded by commercial development.

The survey is being carried out on behalf of Government by independent specialist researchers and will be followed by a workshop discussion involving interested parties. Members of Tynwald will also have an opportunity for input before a final report is prepared by the Working Group.

Working Group chairman Phil Gawne MHK explained:

‘It is important that we gauge public opinion, both local and national, and do so as accurately and objectively as possible. The findings can then be taken into account in reaching some conclusions on the future of the Queen’s Pier.’

Mr Gawne continued:

‘I believe we have a duty to be open with the public and present them with all the potential options that we are aware of, however controversial. I would stress that the Working Group is making no recommendations at this stage - we are simply setting out a number of scenarios to see what people think.’
