Manx National Heritage Launch Winter Lecture Series 17 October 2007

Manx National Heritage will mark the beginning of its winter lecture programme with a public lecture, which will take place at the Manx Museum on Friday 26th October 2007 at 7.30pm.

The lecture will be hosted by Manx National Heritage and the Isle of Man Victorian Society and will be presented by Dr Jennifer Freeman, former Secretary of the Victorian Society (UK) and now Director of the Historic Chapels Trust.

Dr Freeman will focus on the Liverpool born architect, W.D. Caroe, who rose to be joint Architect to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners for England with Joseph Henry Christian (of Manx decent), in succession to Ewan Christian-Henry’s cousin. Caroe was the inspirational designer of St. Ninian’s church in Douglas and the pastoral staff for the Bishop of Sodor and Mann (1908).

Dr. Freeman is authoress of “W.D. Caroe – his architectural achievement” as well as actively working towards the preservation and protection of redundant chapels and other places of worship in England of outstanding architectural and historic interest.

Anthea Young, Education Services Officer for Manx National Heritage said:

“The lecture is the first lecture in Manx National Heritage’s winter events programme and will be followed by a series of eight illustrated lecture and film nights at the Manx Museum, in addition to events, exhibitions and displays at the Manx Museum and House of Manannan throughout the winter period”.

The first lecture in the series will take place on Friday 26th October 2007 at the Manx Museum Lecture Theatre. Doors open at 7pm and admission will be free of charge.
