Governors's Bridge Motion wthdrawn from Tynwald 19 October 2007

A major highway improvement scheme for Governor’s Bridge and the A18 Bemahague Road has been withdrawn from Tynwald and will be rescheduled to go before the Court next year.

The motion calling for Tynwald to approve funding for the scheme was debated in Tynwald this week. However, after concerns were voiced by several Tynwald members, the Hon David Anderson MHK, the Minister for Transport, withdrew the motion.

If the funding had been approved, the scheme – from The Nook to Governor’s Bridge – would have been completed in time for TT 2008. This would have involved constructing a new highway through land adjacent to Government House to replace the existing section of road, with the aim being to improve road safety and traffic capacity.

Mr Anderson explained:

‘Withdrawing the motion means we have missed the window of opportunity to complete in time for TT next year. We therefore envisage tabling a motion again for Tynwald with a view to the works getting underway next year, after we have completed further work and consideration of those matters raised in Tynwald.’
