“Where have All the wildflowers gone?” 26 October 2007

Ox-eye DaisiesManx National Heritage will host the second event in its popular winter lecture series with an illustrated talk by Andree Dubbledam entitled “Where have all the Wildflowers Gone”, on Friday 2nd November 2007, at 7.30pm, in the Manx Museum Lecture Theatre.

The talk will be about Andree’s work in managing the Wildflowers of Mann project, and his mission to encourage the Island’s native flora to thrive.

Andree Dubbeldam commented:

“The Island has already lost many species including five species of orchid and three violets, but the rate of extinction is still accelerating, with many species on the brink. Threats such as climate change, development and habitat change all conspire to make the 21st century potentially the worst for the Manx flora in 10,000 years. Part of the remit of the Wildflowers of Mann Project is to actively assist in the conservation of rare wild flowers, and so a programme of species recovery has been implemented to stem the tide of extinctions”.

Andree Dubbeldam was born in Sussex, England, and graduated from Bangor University with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry in 1997. He has professional experience in forestry, horticulture and ecology. Since becoming Project Manager of the Wildflowers of Mann Project in 2002, his achievements have included the construction and opening of a Showcase Wildflower Garden in St Johns and authorship of the ‘Wildflowers of Mann’ book, a guide to the wild flowers of the Island.

The Wildflowers of Mann initiative is supported by the Isle of Man Government and Manx National Heritage was a contributor to the Project.

The lecture will start at 7.30pm on Friday 2nd November 2007 and will be held at the Manx Museum Lecture Theatre. Doors open at 7pm and admission is free of charge.
