DHSS Ophthalmology Waiting List Initiative underway 5 November 2007

The Department of Health and Social Security is pleased to announce that extra Ophthalmology Clinic Sessions will commence in November 2007, delivered from Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital.

Hon. W.E. Teare MHK, Minister for Health and Social Security said,

“The Department is committed to reducing waiting lists and I am delighted that this initiative is now available for ophthalmology patients, who have waited too long for treatment.”

Operating sessions will begin by January 2008. However, before these appointments are scheduled, the Department must establish that patients, currently on the waiting list, still require their operation and that they have adequate support at home following the procedure. It is also essential that they are able to attend Ramsey District Cottage Hospital. These details will be determined from a questionnaire enclosed with notification letters, which have been posted today.

If there are any concerns about these clinics, details of a helpline are in the letter. Patients can phone to discuss their treatment or any other questions they may have or if they have difficulty in completing the questionnaire.

The Minister added,

“Patients will only be allocated a Ramsey appointment if it is suitable for them, after considering circumstances and medical history. Noble’s clinics will be continuing alongside this initiative. Even if patients are not called as part of the waiting list initiative, they will still be offered an appointment earlier than before, as the overall number of patients waiting for treatment will be reduced.”
