Million Mile Service For Mea Power Plant 7 November 2007

The Pulrose CCGT Power Plant is in the process of a planned maintenance outage for both gas turbines and the steam turbine at Pulrose Power Station. During this time the Island’s electricity is provided mainly by a combination of the subsea cable, a single gas turbine and diesel generator back up. The heating supply to the NSC from the gas turbine secondary waste heat system is interrupted for only one week.

The CCGT plant provides the most efficient low carbon method of supplying electricity to the Island and is therefore required to be available for most of the year. The plant has now been operational for 20,000 hours since it was completed which could be compared to 1.2 million miles for a family saloon car travelling around the earth 50 times.

Maintenance shutdowns are also ideal times to introduce further efficiency improvement projects the MEA is keen to progress. Additional maintenance tasks will see the statutory testing of the high pressure steam and gas systems together with inspection of the Steam Turbine, which in itself is not straight forward, as it takes 2 days for the steam turbine to cool sufficiently in order to allow an engineer the ability to enter the unit safely.

The outage has taken 4 months in the planning and involves the coordination of over 100 maintenance projects led by MEA teams and supported by Island and overseas specialists. Eddie Teare MHK, Chairman said on behalf of the Board “I wish to offer my thanks to the staff who have worked tirelessly for long hours and in difficult conditions. I myself have visited the station during work in progress and I was extremely impressed with skill and efficiency shown by the MEA Generation Team in the way they have implemented this large scale and technically complex maintenance programme.
