New move to help Homeowners reduce energy use 8 November 2007

GRANTS for homeowners to install cavity wall insulation will be more widely available under an amended scheme going before the November sitting of Tynwald.

Subject to Tynwald approval, the change will make all house owner-occupiers eligible for grants covering 50 per cent of the cost of the work, up to a maximum of £500, regardless of their income.

Under the existing scheme grants for cavity wall insulation can only be given to homeowners on low incomes.

The Home Improvement and Energy Conservation (Amendment) Scheme 2007 will be moved in Tynwald by Local Government and Environment Minister, John Shimmin MHK.

Mr Shimmin explained,

‘Cavity wall insulation is a relatively low-cost measure which produces immediate and significant benefits in reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions. ‘Offering grants to a wider range of homeowners should encourage more people to have this work carried out. It is a step in the right direction in terms of protecting our environment’.
