DHSS submit planning permission for new mental health facility 8 November 2007

The Department of Health and Social Security has submitted planning permission for the development of a 16 bed continuing treatment facility for people with enduring mental health problems.

Hon W E Teare MHK, Minister for Health and Social Security said,

“The new facility will enable the Mental Health Service to deliver the best possible treatment to patients with enduring mental health difficulties. The Department recognises the need to provide appropriate accommodation for this client group, as the current premises no longer meets required operational standards.”

Ian Wadsworth, Assistant Director for Mental Health said,

“The building design and specifications of the new premises will enable the clinical team to provide care for some people who previously would require placements off Island.”

The proposed site is situated on the former Ballamona Hospital site, on land between Grianagh Court and Reayrt Noa. The new facility will replace the existing premises at Tynwald Terrace in Strang, Braddan, which is now considered unsuitable for meeting the required needs of patients receiving treatment and rehabilitation programmes.
