Tribute paid to Mr Derek Killey - Bowls Festival Organiser 12 November 2007

The Department of Tourism & Leisure has paid tribute to Mr Derek Killey who passed away on Monday 5th November 2007. Mr Killey was the Festival Director for the Island’s two bowling festivals in June and September. Derek organised these major events on behalf of the Department.

In the 3 years Derek has been organising the bowls festivals the numbers of visiting bowlers has grown. Derek’s achievements were recognised when the 2006 June event won “Best Event” as part of the official Tourism Awards.

Derek led a strong team of bowls enthusiasts and helpers in his role as organiser. He worked tirelessly behind the scenes dedicating months of planning to bring about these highly successful events. Despite the pressure involved in organising so many aspects of the event, Derek’s sense of fun and humour never diminished.

Minister for Tourism & Leisure, Hon. Adrian Earnshaw, MHK said:

‘Derek’s hard work made a significant contribution to tourism and to visiting bowlers’ enjoyment, my thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.’
