Celebration of Christmas at the House of Manannan 26 November 2007

Father Christmas at the House of ManannanOn Saturday 1st December 2007, Manx National Heritage will host a day of traditional Christmas crafts and celebrations at the House of Manannan in Peel.

Throughout the day, visitors will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of festive activities including making traditional Christmas tree decorations, hand crafted Christmas cards and weaving seasonal decorations using locally grown willow.

In addition to these traditional craft activities, Jack Kaighan, a member of the Friends of Manx National Heritage will present a ‘Magic Lantern‘ show. The lantern show will begin at 2pm and includes slides of how Christmas was celebrated in times past on the Island, together with images of Peel in years gone by.

Caarjyn Cooidjagh, an a capella choir directed by Annie Kissack, will be singing around the Christmas tree at 3pm, so the whole family can gather round and enjoy Caarjyn Cooidjagh’s special music.

Despite a heavy work load and secrecy regarding his movements, there have been rumours in the ‘Reindeer Times’ that, between 10am to 12pm and 2pm to 4pm, Father Christmas will visit The House of Manannan with a sack presents for children attending the event.

Maureen Kennaugh of Manx National Heritage said:

“This is a great opportunity for all the family to begin their Christmas celebrations at the House of Manannan through enjoying Christmas crafts and festive celebrations.
Seasonal refreshments will be available including mulled wine and mince pies served by the Friends of Manx National Heritage, and there will also be a raffle to win a beautiful hand made Christmas cake with a special Manx theme. Proceeds from the raffle will go towards the work of the Friends of Manx National Heritage, a registered charity committed to conserving the cultural heritage and natural environment of the Isle of Man for future generations to enjoy”.

The event begins at 10am until 5pm and visitors to the event will be able to enjoy the many galleries, together with the Heritage Shop at the House of Manannan, which is located on the Quayside in Peel. All of the special festive activities and events are included in the normal admission charge; although a small charge will apply for refreshments. Admission is free to members of the Friends of Manx National Heritage.

So come along to the House of Manannan on Saturday 1st December 2007 between 10pm and 5pm and celebrate Christmas with Manx National Heritage.
