Langness Peninsula footpath inquiry 29 November 2007

After taking legal advice, the Department of Transport has taken the decision to hold an Inquiry under section 117 of the Highways Act 1986 as to the status of a footpath on the Langness Peninsula, which is currently the subject of a dispute between landowners and members of the PROWL campaigning group, and as to whether the Department should take any action in relation to the footpath under section 39 of that Act.

The footpath in question follows the route from the Department of Transport’s car park around the coastline and passes to the seaward side of the Langness lighthouse.

The Department has tabled a motion for the December sitting of Tynwald for the passing of a resolution to enable the person holding the Inquiry to exercise powers conferred by the Inquiries (Evidence) Act 2003.
