First Responder Scheme to the South 29 November 2007

Due to the success of the Peel First Responder Scheme, together with a newly-formed scheme in Ramsey due to go live shortly, the Island’s Ambulance Service, in partnership with St John Ambulance, are looking for support and volunteers to increase the number of First Responder Schemes Island-wide.

Community first responders attend selected life-threatening medical emergencies whilst an ambulance is en route.

Steve Sieling, Chief Ambulance Officer said,

“In my mind there can be no better way of serving your community than volunteering to be a potential life saver in your own neighbourhood.”

Interest has already been expressed for a First Responder Scheme in the south of the Island, and a public meeting is to take place at Scoill Phurt le Moirrey, Port St Mary, on the evening of the 5th December, commencing at 7:30pm. This will involve a First Responder Scheme presentation, followed by the opportunity to talk to representatives of the St John Ambulance, the Island’s Ambulance Officers and to hear from members of the Peel First Responder scheme.

Steve Sieling added,

“If you are interested in being a responder for any of the schemes, or to act as co-ordinator in their own area, please come along to the meeting in Port St Mary”.

No previous medical knowledge is required and training will be given, with a short course held, usually, over two weekends.

For those who are not able to make the meeting, further information can be obtained by calling St John Ambulance on 674387 or Steve Sieling on 642134.
